Stewartry RFC minis take on Dalziel in Greenlaw friendly match

Club News, Primary (P1-P7) | 19th May 2019

Stewartry minis welcomed Dalziel to Greenlaw on Saturday.

The visitors fielded an all primary seven team against the mixed primary six/seven of the Sharks and there were a few raised eyebrows among the home spectators when Dalziel emerged for their warm up due to the sheer size of some of their players. However, once the game got under way it was apparent Stewartry would not be overawed.

The game was split into three thirds of 10 minutes and the first 10 minutes saw the Blacks play some of their best rugby of the season as they roared into a three try lead.

Dalziel just couldn’t deal with the free running Ryan Hind and the directness of Callum McDougall and William Cawthorn driving up the middle. In defence, tackles were made and turnovers won.

The second 10 minute spell saw Dalziel come back into it and they managed to close the gap to one try as the young Blacks dropped off a couple of tackles, although in fairness the visitors did employ a useful tactic of giving the ball to the biggest lad on the park.

The last third saw Stewartry put the game to bed when they got back to doing what they do best with some excellent passing rugby with the pick of tries from Fraser Davies as he rounded off an overlap to touch down in the corner to see the Sharks run out winners by six tries to four.
